Pamela Anderson, an American actress active at PETA - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, arrived in Israel this week for some modelling work.
But she didn't miss a single opportunity to promote a new law against fur manufacturing and import.
Israel is about to become the first country in the world to pass such a law in parliament.
In a small vegetarian restaurant in Tel Aviv, Anderson met with the Israeli media.
Everyone was waiting in anticipation of her arrival.
Jane HaLevi, Israeli PETA Representative:
“OK, she’ll be here in 10 minutes.”
At last, Anderson arrives with a US PETA representative.
In the background, there are two Tablets of the Covenant; one is written in Hebrew, While the other says in English, “Thou shall not kill…..
Animals”Pamela Anderson, Actress and Animal Rights Activist:
"I’d like to say ‘Thou shall not kill’ includes also animals."
Dan Mathews, Senior Vice President of PETA, USA:
"She is the ambassador of PETA all over the world. Wherever she goes she promotes animals rights, and also here tonight."
Knesset Member Ronit Tirosh, who initiated the bill against furs, also arrived at the meeting, and was greeted warmly.
One of the major issues is that the Jewish Orthodox community in Israel uses furs for decorating men’s hats – Shtreimel.
Ronit Tirosh, Israeli Knesset Member:
“I am trying hard to promote the bill. I am optimistic; it is going to take time because of the orthodox people”
During the press conference, Anderson made a phone call to Knesset Member Alex Miller, Chair of the Knesset Education Committee, asking him why there is still no progress with the bill.
Pamela Anderson, Actress and Animal Rights Activist:
Hello mister Miller, I am very glad, how are you?"
Thank you mister Miller".
As the press conference closed, everyone joined in a call for life.
Dan Mathews & Pamela Anderson:
“Le haiim, Le haiim – no more furs"
Anderson and her entourage went to a restaurant to enjoy a vegetarian hamburger and exotic fruit juice.
During the meal, Anderson signed a leaflet saying “all animals have the same organs,” with the organs portrayed on her own body.
On her way back to the hotel, Anderson received a gift from an admirer.
Animal Rights activists in Israel hope that Anderson’s visit will promote the bill against fur manufacturing and import, and that Israel will become the first country in the world to pass this law.
