The wedding was a triumph — both a glorious national spectacle and a joyful union between a young couple in love. Now, for the new Duchess of Cambridge, the question is: what comes next?
Or to be more precise: after the thrill and drama of the wedding, how is she going to adjust to the life that lies ahead of her? What is she going to do with herself all day?
For any newly-married officer’s wife, military life can come as something of a shock. The world of the garrison is a very small one, where pettiness can become dangerously magnified and boredom stalks many waking hours.
Such traps are avoidable if you can immerse yourself in looking after a family (a career of your own being difficult, if not impossible, when you don’t know where your husband’s next posting will be).
Kate, however, is unlikely to have a baby immediately, and has had no career to speak of. Added to which, she’s now one of The Firm.
Are we really to believe that she and Prince William plan merely to continue the quiet life of domestic bliss they led at their rented Anglesey cottage before the wedding?
After all, they’ve already had 15 months doing that; it’s not as though these newlyweds need time to get used to being together.
