HOLLYWOOD star Rob Lowe is grateful for the leaked tape that showed him having sex with two women more than 20 years ago.
Rob Lowe, the former high-flying Hollywood "Brat Packer" with Charlie Sheen and Molly Ringwald, said it wasn't his career that benefited from the leaked sex tape, it was his health.
"Because what it ends up doing is accelerating my alcohol (addiction) to where I finally get sober," Lowe said on The Oprah Winfrey Show.
"I have been able to have the rest of my life that I'm so blessed with, which is now 20 years of sobriety.
"I don't think any of it would have happened without that."
The 1988 scandal - one of the partners was 16 - is touched on in Lowe's new memoir, Stories I Only Tell My Friends: An Autobiography.
Lowe entered rehab for sex and alcohol addiction after the scandal.
Celebrity sex tapes are relatively common these days, with stars such as rocker Tommy Lee and then-wife Pamela Anderson, Paris Hilton, and Kim Kardashian inadvertently titillating millions of viewers with their peccadilloes. Lowe would like some credit.
""Let me just say this," 47-year-old Lowe said.
"Sometimes being a trailblazer is highly overrated."
He joked to Reuters that he should be paid a fee on all future sex tapes.
"If I just had one cent of the Kardashian tape I could return and do Uncle Vanya on Broadway for the rest of my life and be perfectly content," he added.
In the often self-deprecating book, Lowe recounts his transformation from small-town kid in Ohio to teenage movie star alongside the likes of Charlie Sheen and Molly Ringwald.
Lowe's career was reawakened in 1999 when he was cast in The West Wing. He has recently starred in Brothers & Sisters and Californication. He currently co-stars in the TV comedy Parks and Recreation.
