NASA satellite to crash Friday night or Saturday morning Photos

A 20-year-old satellite that measured the ozone layer is expected to crash back to Earth Today, but NASA said Friday it still does not know where it will fall.

The US space agency stressed that the risk to public safety from the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) is "extremely small," and said that most, but not all, of the gear will burn up on re-entry into Earth's atmosphere.

"Re-entry is expected Sept. 23, plus or minus a day. The re-entry of UARS is advancing because of a sharp increase in solar activity since the beginning of this week," NASA said in a brief update on its website.

"Safety is NASA's top priority," it added, noting that throughout history, there have been "no confirmed reports of an injury resulting from re-entering space objects."

The decommissioned satellite could land anywhere between 57 degrees north latitude and 57 degrees south latitude, a vast swath of populated territory. Predictions will only get more precise as the landing approaches.

The UARS satellite was sent into orbit in 1991 by the space shuttle Discovery.

The 35 by 15 foot (three by 10 meter) spacecraft weighed 13,000 pounds (5,900 kilograms) and toted 10 scientific instruments for measuring wind, temperature and ozone chemistry. It was officially decommissioned in 2005.

"Although the spacecraft will break into pieces during re-entry, not all of it will burn up in the atmosphere," NASA said.

"It is impossible to pinpoint just where in that zone the debris will land, but NASA estimates the debris footprint will be about 500 miles (800 kilometers) long," the space agency said.

It also urged anyone who comes across what they believe may be space debris not to touch it, but to call authorities for assistance.

Bollywood Actor Saif Ali Khan's Father and Former Indian cricket captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi passed away on Thursday evening following prolonged lung-infection. Pataudi, who is survived by wife Sharmila Tagore and three children breathed his last at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi.

Seventy-old Pataudi was admitted to the hospital last month following severe lung infection.
Pataudi had played 46 Test matches for India.
He was also known as Tiger Pataudi and Nawab Pataudi
He passed away around 5.55 pm. His condition had deteriorated since yesterday. He was suffering from interstitial lung disease (interstitial pneumonitis) which worsens rapidly inspite of the best treatment available," Dr S P Byotra, Department of medicine in Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, where Pataudi was admitted, said.

"He was unable to maintain his oxygen level in spite of maximal treatment. He continued to remain in the ICU for nearly a month. He had this disease which had been static since the last three months and worsened very acutely over the last four weeks, the doctor said

 

Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi Profile

Pataudi debuted against England in the home series in 1961. Soon after though, a car accident permanently damaged vision in his right eye. He was elevated as the Indian captain in 1962. He led India in 40 of his 46 test matches and won 9 of those More importantly, he instilled the self-belief in the Indian team that they could compete with the giants of international cricket. It was under him that India achieved their first ever away series victory against New Zealand in 1967. He was axed as the skipper in 1970 and was dropped from the team in 1975. 

Pataudi married popular film actress, Sharmila Tagore on December 27th, 1969. Pataudi went on to represent the English county, Sussex with distinction. 

Pataudi was a member of the IPL governing body for the first three years and resigned from his position when the Lalit Modi controversy broke out. He was one of the few who advocated cleaning up the mess in the BCCI following several financial bungling. 

Pataudi was honored with the Arjuna Award in 1964 and was the recipient of the prestigious Padma Shri in 1967. The BCCI recognised his yeoman service to the game and honored him by naming the Test confrontations between India and England as the Pataudi Trophy, the first of which was played between the two sides when India toured England in 2007. Co-incidentally, it was the 75th anniversary of Test matches between India and England.

 

ICC approve World Cup qualifying system For worldcup 2015

London-Cricket's governing body the International Cricket Council (ICC) approved a new system of qualifying for the 2015 World Cup here on Monday.

The ICC annual conference, being held in Hong Kong, has decided that the 2015 World Cup to be held in Australia and New Zealand will comprise 14 teams and include four slots for the Associate countries.

Format of 2015 Cricket world cup: The same format was used in the 1996 tournament, co-hosted by India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka and won by the Sri Lankans. Another path is to choose a round-robin model where each team plays each other once before the semi-finals, as was the case when Australia and New Zealand hosted in 1992.

Speaking to Gulf News from Hong Kong, Mazhar Khan, the administrator of the Emirates Cricket Board, said: "It is indeed great to be among the nations to be in contention for the 2015 World Cup."

The UAE, recent winners of the ICC's World Cricket League Division Two championship, are among the strong contenders such as Ireland and Afghanistan for a place in the 2015 World Cup.

"The UAE will look forward to the qualifications and this decision is a sigh of relief for all Associate and even Affiliate members," said Khan.

The historic decision was taken on the third day of the ICC's annual conference after the cricket body had come under scathing criticism from the Associate and Affiliate member-countries for keeping them out of the World Cup.

It was also decided that the number of teams to take part in the Twenty20 World Cup to be held in Sri Lanka next year and in Bangladesh in 2014 will be reduced to 12. Earlier, it was decided that 16 teams would take part in the Twenty20 World Cup.

The decision is also a big boost for Ireland who had shocked England in the 2011 World Cup. The ICC Chief Executive committee had recommended to the executive board that a qualifying tournament for the 2015 World Cup should be held to decide on the teams to play in the event.

According to available information, the Associate members managed to overthrow the decision to make the 2015 World Cup a 10-team event as part of a deal to support the scrapping of the rotation policy in the appointment of the ICC president.

The scrapping of the rotation policy would result in Pakistani and Bangladeshi candidates missing their chance to hold the highest post in world cricket. As per the rotation policy, Pakistan and Bangladesh were to nominate the next candidate for the posts of president and vice president.

To pass the resolution, the ICC needed eight of the 10 full members and 38 of the 50 Associate member countries to vote in favour of the motion. With the Associate countries now being pacified, it appears this motion may now be passed.

Meanwhile, the Executive Board has confirmed that the Reliance ICC Rankings are suitable for use in determining qualification for ICC global events. The Board confirmed that the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2019 would be a 10-team event with the top eight in the Reliance ICC rankings earning their qualification automatically and the remaining two places being decided by a qualification competition
