High praise for Ranbir Kapoor flowing in from all sides for his portrayal of rockstar Jordan in his latest film.

However, his most recent "certified fan" is none other than B-town biggie Karan Johar who recently expressed his liking for RK junior on a microblogging site. Significantly, the film-maker has been shooting for his next "Student Of The Year" for quite some time now. Noting how hectic his schedule has been, Johar posted on the site, "Been shooting crazy hours..hectic but super fun...watched ROCKSTAR...and am a certified Ranbir Kapoor fan!! His performance is unbelievable!" Interestingly, most fellow actors, directors and veteran film stars have also been praising Ranbir for his performance. Well, we do like the admiration club in B-town.

Movie Review : Rockstar

Director: Imtiaz Ali;
Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Nargis Fakhri, Shammi Kapoor, Shikha Jain, Jaideep Ahlawat, Aditi Rao Hydari, Piyush Mishra;
Running time: 160 mins;
Certificate: PG
Borne entirely of the imagination of Imtiaz Ali, Rockstar is the fictional story of Janardhan Jhakar, a small town boy with big dreams of becoming a rock star like his idol Jim Morrison. Lacking any personal tragedy that might infuse his music with passion, Janardhan goes on a quest for love and unwittingly embarks on a journey that culminates in his dramatic descent into oblivion. Using a non linear narrative style, the film depicts his emotional journey, from Janardhan the college geek, to Jordan, the angst ridden rock god who fills out stadiums.

The film opens with a bedraggled Jordan, fighting off police as he makes his way to his own concert. The footage is interspersed with flashbacks to the character in his youth, a gawky guitar wielding rock star wannabe, who sings to queues of people at bus stands.

Rockstar engages you from its very opening sequence through to its emotional denouement. Director Imtiaz Ali adeptly employs a range of elements that, in combination, render the film enthralling. The film is smattered with wry humour and witty dialogue where you least expect it. The non-linear style works brilliantly, maintaining a sense of escalating drama and building to a crescendo, as piece-by-piece we discover the incidents that lead to the genesis of the tormented artist.

Key to the film's authenticity is an outstanding performance by Ranbir Kapoor, who has immersed himself in the role. Kapoor's performance as the wilful Jordan, a loose canon and a free spirit with a sense of entitlement, belies his years, as he undergoes a dramatic transformation. We trace the emotional trajectory of Jordan over a period of seven years, and with subtle nuances Kapoor captures the character's unravelling. Jordan's burgeoning angst is conveyed in his physicality as he transmutes into a Che Guevara styled urban guerilla. Kapoor reportedly learnt to play the guitar for the role and his performance is so realistic that, coupled with the documentary style concert footage, it's easy confuse the film for a real life biopic.

Nargis Fakhri, meanwhile, is well cast as Heer and makes a bold cinematic debut. She brings naturalism, effervescence and incandescent beauty to the role, though her lack of experience is evident in the more intense stand-offs with Kapoor. Both actors have a natural chemistry and convey the unfettered spirit that unites the lovers, and depicting the carefree lunacy of their youth which is displaced by the torment of a forbidden passion and illicit love.

The music is integral to the story and bears all the hallmarks of A.R. Rahman's personal brand of genius. The soundtrack complements the emotional peaks and troughs in the narrative, and set against the backdrop of the stunning planes of Kashmir and Prague, is entirely compelling.

With subtle allusions to classic stories of forbidden love such as Romeo and Juliet and Heer Ranjha,
Rockstar is a riveting portrait of the destruction that ensues in the face of passion and desire borne of forbidden love.

A simple story, beautifully enacted, perfectly crafted, there is not much to fault in this film. Exemplary cinema by any standards.

Catch me if you can!

Nargis Fakhri is almost put under 'house arrest' by 'Rockstar' director Imtiaz Ali apparently to retain the mystery surrounding her. Mauli Singh reports on the 'surprise element' strategy and if it really works in favour of films

She has not yet proved herself onscreen, but Nargis Fakhri seems to have already caught the imagination of Bollywood followers thanks to her mentor Imtiaz Ali.

The filmmaker is pulling out all the stops to maintain the mystery surrounding his American find before their Rockstar hits theatres this year. Not surprisingly, she'll be kept out of all the promotional events, too.

Confirms a source, "Nargis will not interact much with the media till the film's release. Ranbir Kapoor (the film's main protagonist) will mostly promote the movie. This is all part of the promotional strategy."

Apparently, this is also the reason why the half-Pak, half-Czech hottie was missing from the music launch event held in Delhi recently. "The makers want people to see her work and then introduce her to the media.

They don't want her to get over exposed before the release of the film, and lose her charm. They want to retain the mysterious air around the supermodel," the source adds.

Avoiding the paparazzi
Even during the making of the movie, Imtiaz did everything possible to keep Nargis under wraps. She wasn't even allowed to go to public places and get photographed by the paparazzi.

The only gossip we did get to hear about her included romantic link ups with co-star Ranbir and later model/actor Shayan Munshi.

Since the film's publicity has started, the actress was expected to finally surface.

But Imtiaz seems to be very protective about her, like he has been with all his girls (Giselli Monteiro was introduced to the media only post Love Aaj Kal release). But it's not just the Rockstar director.

Of late, several producers have been adopting this strategy of introducing (and fiercely guarding) surprise elements, be it a debut actor, a new look, special effects or a special appearance by a well-known superstar in a film

Due to the media boom it has become all the more difficult for filmmakers to keep their reel secrets under wraps.

To ensure that the story or the 'surprise' doesn't leak out, production houses have started signing non-disclosure contracts with their actors and directorial crew.

It doesn't stop there. Besides the lead cast, no other actor is given the full script.

Anushka Sharma, Giselli Monteiro and Nargis Fakhri

A character artiste confirms, "We don't get to read the whole script of the film. We are given a gist of our roles and we get the script scene-wise only a night before our shoot. It's done to ensure that story doesn't leak out."

An assistant director of another hyped upcoming film adds, "We are starting the shoot of our film in a few days and we still haven't been told who the lead actor is as the makers don't want to disclose it."

All the big film studios have become extra cautious about guarding their films that are under production.

In fact, only recently Karan Johar spruced up the security of his forthcoming Agneepath after Mid-day leaked Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra's look.

Hit or miss?
But do such strategies work? Does it really make sense for Nargis Fakhri to be kept away from the media, especially when Ranbir is the main protagonist of the film? Film historian Dinesh Raheja says, "If the heroine is in the titular role (Heena, Julie, Bobby) keeping her under wraps makes sense because there is so much curiosity about her, but not if it's a second fiddle or an arm candy. Actresses take a huge risk by agreeing to remain low profile.

If you keep a heroine under wraps and the film fails, she stands to lose the most. No one will be interested in talking to the actor of a failed film. Between Anushka Sharma (who was also kept under wraps for Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi) and Giselli, the former benefited more since her films were bigger hits."

Giselli says, "Yes, every film has a pre-decided publicity plan, which is in the best interest of the project."
No wonder then Imtiaz seems to be backing off his stance a bit.

The spokesperson of Rockstar informs, "We are going to reveal Nargis at a dandiya night in Ahmedabad on October 2. She is also walking the ramp for Manish Malhotra next month.

She will also have media interactions before the release of the film, but we still have to work out the details." Let's just hope Nargis is worth the wait and not a disappointment like many other 'surprises' sprung on us by filmmakers!

Kissing in films is like action sequence: Ranbir Kapoor

New Delhi: He has shot a quite a few kissing scenes already in his movies and actor Ranbir Kapoor says that filming a lip lock is mechanical, just like an action sequence.

The actor has locked lips with a number of his leading ladies, including Deepika Padukone in 'Bachna Ae Haseeno', Priyanka Chopra in 'Anjaana Anjaani', American actress Sarah Thompson in 'Raajneeti' and Nargis Fakhri in his upcoming film 'Rockstar'.

"I do love stories most of the time. Naturally kissingscenes do come up. I don't say 'daalo' (put in) kissing scenes. Moreover, it's too awkward to kiss a girl in front of a hundred people on the sets in front of a camera and lights. It's too mechanical.

"For me, a kissing scene is just like an action sequence. Normally, I finish off the kissing scene in a single take," Ranbir told India TV.

When asked whether he would go for a love marriage or arranged, the actor, who earlier dated Deepika Padukone, said, "I will prefer a love marriage, and I will arrange my parents to agree to it."

Ranbir also slammed reports linking him to his co-stars. "I have remained single for some time now. I am a 28-year-old man. I also want to take girls out to dinner, but I spent most of my time on the sets. Now if I take my heroines to dinner, the media splashes it saying I am having an affair. When I don't shoot, I stay at home."

Kissing scene is like shooting action sequence: Ranbir Kapoor

New Delhi: Bollywood heartthrob Ranbir Kapoor has locked lips with his co-stars on screen and says that shooting kissing scenes is like doing an action sequence.

"I do love stories most of the time. Naturally kissing scenes do come up. I don`t say `daalo` (put in) kissing scenes. Moreover, it`s too awkward to kiss a girl in front of hundred people on the sets and in front of camera and lights," Ranbir, who had kissing scenes in "Bachna Aae Haseeno", said on India TV`s show Aapki Adalat.

"It`s too mechanical. For me, a kissing scene is just like an action sequence. Normally, I finish off the kissing scene in a single take," added the actor who locked lips with Priyanka Chopra in "Anjaana Anjaani".

The actor, who is busy in promoting his upcoming film "Rockstar", however, got conscious when asked about his broken relationship with actress Deepika Padukone.

"I had a relationship with Deepika. She still continues to be my good friend. But the issue on which our relationship broke is a personal matter. It will be very unfair to the girl if I speak about that, because Deepika is single and may marry someone in future", Ranbir said.

Meanwhile, the two actors are set to romance on big screen again in Karan Johar`s new production "Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani".

I'm very heterosexual: Ranbir Kapoor

His personal life is anything but personal and the link-ups with his co-stars, infamous. But Ranbir Kapoor has no qualms leading the life of a "Rockstar". The actor who was in town to unveil the poster of his forthcoming film gets candid about his love for women, the late Shammi Kapoor, working with Nargis Fakhri, South star Ileana and more.

Ranbir who has been making headlines for his various link-ups, says he enjoys the casanova tag, but wishes his life was actually as "exaggerated" as they make it out to be. "Initially it was embarrassing. Now, it's okay. I enjoy it sometimes. Not everything written is a lie though. Eighty per cent of it is the truth, the exaggerated version, of course. They make my life out to be more glamorous than it actually is. On the contrary, I lead a very simple life. I wake up, brush my teeth, go to work and come back home," says Ranbir.

Deepika, Ranbir together again

Karan Johar's banner that gave us Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kal Ho Na Ho, Kabhie Alvida Na Kehna and some of the best contemporary romantic fare, has just announced Ayan Mukerjee's film. It is a love story, which Dharma Productions excel in.

This (hold your breath!) Ranbir Kapoor-Deepika Padukone film is titled Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani.

Says Karan Johar, "The line Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani is taken from the famous RD Burman song from the 70s hit Jawani Deewani. It will our second film with Ranbir and Ayan, the team that won awards and accolades for Wake Up Sid.While WUS was a coming of age film, YJHD is quintessentially a romantic one." When asked how Deepika managed to bag this film when so many other heroines out there were actually vying for it, Karan says, "Ayan, Ranbir and I are convinced she is the best choice for the film.''

I never dated Ranbir : Katrina Kaif

One of the top actresses in the film industry today, Katrina Kaif seems to be on the face of every magazine cover, and on every other ad.

In a revealing interview with Zoom TV, Katrina talked about everything under the sun -- from her relationship with the top three Khans in the industry, her link-up with Ranbir Kapoor and even growing up without a father.
We present an excerpt of the interview:

What was it like growing up in a house with six sisters? Do they look up to you?
Oh no, they don't. There is a certain amount of responsibility that I am now aware I have. I have a family which is dependant on me. They are all strong and incredibly intelligent and when we all do get together, it is really nice. Those are the times that I miss.

It's also nice to see that there is a whole other world out there and they are surviving and doing great and it's not just the film industry world that exists.

One of your sisters Isabella is trying to get into the movies. Has she signed something?
No, she's actually not here. There were a few misreports that she was looking and trying to get into the industry, which is not correct. She is currently in New York. She has been studying for the last two years. She has done her acting training but she's not here yet. She is yet to decide.

I'm hoping she does and if here's where she wants to work, then obviously now I think I have some very good friends and obviously, it would be easier for her.

Shahrukh Khan and Ranbir Kapoor on Hrithik’s show

As part of the promotions for their upcoming movies, actors Shah Rukh Khan and Ranbir Kapoor have agreed to be part of the finale of Hrithik Roshan’s dance and reality show, Just Dance. The show that opened to a cumulative rating of 4.7 this June and got Hrithik voted as the best debutant judge-anchor imported from Bollywood on to the tube, will wrap up on October 1. The finale episode, however, will be shot in bits and pieces across two or three days in the last week of this month.

Shah Rukh, who will be on the show to promote RA.One, has already shot a promo on the day he launched the music of his fantasy, adventure at Film City, Goregaon. He will shoot his portions of the show two days in advance since he has committed to appear on another reality show on the same day as Hrithik’s finale shoot.
Ranbir, however, will be with Hrithik on the day the latter shoots the finale that has found its finalists in Ankan Sen, Surjeet Bansal and Karan Pangali. Rockstar’s lead actor will crown the winner, who will also shoot a music video with the show’s star-judge at some point in future as a promised prize alongside cash. It’s the first time that three male actors will appear together on a reality show that’s judged by one of them.

It’s rumoured that Hrithik’s debut show is wrapping up before time since it couldn’t manage to get the right numbers. It’s also said that the channel may not consider bringing the dance show back, and if they do so, it may not feature Hrithik. However, our well-placed source from the channel insists that the show is wrapping up a week after its actual deadline but refused to comment on Hrithik’s return. We sent several messages to Monica Shergill, senior creative director, Star Plus. But at the time of going to press, she hadn’t responded.

Chi Chi’s tribute to Shammi
Govinda has been entertaining us in many shades, grooving to the moves of Bollywood music. He, along with Sachin Tendulkar, will showcase his moves as a tribute to Shammi Kapoor on NDTV on September 18. In a bid to raise funds for better schools, the actor like many others, will encourage viewers to offer help.

Ranbir follows Salman-Akshay

Like Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar who are known for sitting on the edit of their films, even Ranbir sits on edit of his item song.

Ranbir Kapoor is a bundle of nerves these days! The sexy bachelor who is all geared up for his item number in the upcoming film Chillar Party , is getting pre-release jitters and is getting deeply involved with the edit sessions to leave no stone unturned to perfect the final cut.

This is for the first time that Ranbir Kapoor will be seen doing an item number. It is heard that although Ranbir is very happy with the final dance number choreographed by Bosco Caesar, he wants to sit and watch the song once again, this time under full scrutiny, and make sure that every little move is impeccable and fun to watch. "Ranbir is taking all this pain to make sure that his first item number doesn't meet any glitches and wins him the audience's applauds", says a unit-hand from the film.
