With the film still banned in UP and losing its Friday collections in Punjab and AP and with below average reviews, Aarakshan has opened to average response.
The first big release in the month of Ramzan and four week since Singham has been ruling the box-office, Aarakshan opened to average response. Thanks to the hype and star-value, occupancy was in the range of 60-80% over the opening weekend. However the fact that the release was delayed in states like Punjab and Andhra Pradesh by a day has hugely affected the business. The film hasn't yet released in Uttar Pradesh, which is a big market for a film like this.
The reviews were mixed with several people criticizing Prakash Jha's half-hearted take on the issue of reservations. So business was affected in long run despite an extended weekend with the Monday national holiday (Independence Day). The film has managed to collect Rs 18 crores in its opening weekend, which is a decent figure but considering the scale on which it was made and the long holiday period, business should certainly have been better.
The other release Phhir produced by Vikram Bhatt went pretty much unnoticed. It is surprising that the film released without any buzz considering Vikram Bhatt's films, however small they might be, are decent on promotions. Moreover his last film Haunted was a big hit and even the last film by Phhir 's lead pair Adah Sharma and Rajnish Duggal, 1920 was successful.
The coming week sees multiple releases again. The most spoken about release is Ram Gopal Varma's Not A Love Story inspired from the Neeraj Grover murder case. Parvin Dabas' directorial debut Sahi Dhandhe Galat Bande is small in its magnitude but could work provided it's big on content. Sanjay Dutt's desi version of Pink Panther in his much-delayed film Chatur Singh Two Star will also finally release this week. Last but not the least is a film called Cover Story , the official remake of a Dutch film ' Interview ' also remade in Hollywood with Sienna Miller in the lead role. Jackie Shroff and Sheena Nayyar play lead roles in the Hindi version, which not many might be aware of.
